Visiting National Parks on the GoWild! Pass: A Hub-by-Hub Guide

A GoWild! Pass makes the flight part of a national park trip almost free: about $15 each way on most domestic flights. That changes how you plan. Instead of picking one park and building a trip around it, you can pick a hub airport that sits near several parks and decide where to go once you see which seats are open.

The catch is timing. Domestic GoWild! seats open the day before departure, so this works best for flexible travelers who can leave on short notice. It is a poor fit for parks that need permits or lodging booked months ahead.

Pick the hub, then the park

Drive times below are rough and depend on traffic, season and which part of a park you're heading to. Check each park's page on nps.gov for current conditions, entry rules and closures before you go.

  • Denver (DEN): Rocky Mountain National Park is roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive. Summer visits can require a timed-entry reservation, so check the park's rules.
  • Las Vegas (LAS): the most flexible park hub. Death Valley is about 2 hours, Zion about 2.5 hours, and the Grand Canyon's South Rim is a long day's drive at around 4.5 hours.
  • Phoenix (PHX): Saguaro National Park near Tucson is about 1.5 to 2 hours away, and the Grand Canyon's South Rim is roughly 3.5 hours.
  • Salt Lake City (SLC): the gateway to Utah's red rock parks, such as Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef, at roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours each.
  • Seattle (SEA): Mount Rainier is around 2 hours away, with Olympic and North Cascades National Parks a little farther.
  • Sacramento (SMF): Yosemite is roughly 3.5 hours away, with Lassen Volcanic National Park a bit closer.
  • San Diego (SAN): Joshua Tree National Park is about 2.5 hours away.
  • Miami (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale (FLL): Everglades National Park is about an hour from either, and Biscayne National Park is close to Miami.
  • El Paso (ELP): White Sands National Park is about 1.5 hours away, with Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns a longer drive east.

Why clustering parks beats one-park trips

Because the flight is cheap, your real costs become the rental car, lodging and park entry. Spreading those over three or four parks in one trip lowers the cost per park. Las Vegas and Salt Lake City work well for this, since several parks sit within a loop of the airport.

What the trip actually costs

  • Flights: around $15 each way on most domestic GoWild! flights, so about $30 round trip per person. International flights cost more.
  • Rental car: usually the biggest line item. Book it for the days you need, and compare airport and off-airport prices.
  • Lodging: gateway towns can fill up, so plan where you'll sleep before you rely on a last-minute flight.
  • Park entry: individual parks charge entry fees, and an annual America the Beautiful pass was about $80 at the time of writing. Confirm the current price on nps.gov.
  • Bags: the pass fare covers a personal item. Anything larger can cost extra, so pack light for a park trip.

A routine that works with a day-before window

  • Choose two or three hubs you could reach, such as Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
  • Search each hub the day before you want to fly and look for the best outbound and return seats.
  • Book refundable or flexible lodging first, so a sold-out flight does not leave you with a lost deposit.
  • Check the return before you commit. A park trip with no seat home is the real risk.
  • Keep a backup hub and a backup date, because seats sell out.

Plan around blackout dates

Holiday weeks are the hard limit. In our blackout calendar, Thanksgiving week and December 19 to January 3 are blacked out, along with a few days around Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents' Day. Spring break Fridays and weekends in March 2027 are also on the list. Pick off-peak weekdays when you can. They tend to be less crowded at the parks too.

Blackout dates, seat availability, park rules and prices change. Confirm everything with Frontier and the National Park Service before you travel.
